Staff Spotlight- Mya

Meet Mya! Mya is taking on a brand new role for us as our Prevention and Administrative Specialist. Mya started with us back in August of 2023 as an Intern in our Communications Department and transitioned into her new role at the end of 2023. Having graduated from UNO with a degree in Journalism and Media Communications with a minor in Nonprofit Management, this new role is uniquely suited to Mya as it combines working in Prevention (which helps with rent and utilities assistance to prevent homelessness in our community) along with some administrative work in communications and accounting.

Already in her short time with us, Mya’s work has impacted our community in positive ways. One of her first Prevention clients was a married couple who applied for rent assistance. They had 2 children and another on the way and Mya was able to help them secure their rent just before taking their new baby home. “They just needed a little help, and I was so glad they could come home from the hospital with their rent taken care of.” Mya also played a role in our Holiday Event this past year and was the person who called all of the families on our Waitlist to inform them that we would be able to help them with their Christmas gifts. “It was really humbling to make those calls,” she says, “everyone was so grateful and there were a lot of tears because we were going to be able to help them with gifts for their kids.”

Some of Mya’s favorite things include international travel, camping, doing puzzles, and hanging out with her 3 Great Danes. She also loves the color green and collects stickers and pins from all of the amazing places she’s visited. Having navigated through the early Covid years as a high school senior (2020 graduate) and then experiencing those first months of college fully online made for a difficult start to the freedom and independence that comes with graduating from high school. Additionally, Mya lost her grandma and brother during those months and dealt with a heavy burden of grief and loss. “It was a really hard time of life,” she says, “but it made me stronger and really gave me more grace in dealing with others.” Mya’s strength and grace for others are not the only qualities she brings to her work. Organization, creativity, and curiosity are some of Mya’s strongest traits and help equip her for the everyday work of homeless services. We are so grateful that Mya is sharing her gifts with the community in her role with us at New Visions!
