It’s time to meet another one of our amazing staff team! Doug is a part of our Omaha Veteran’s Campus staff, a PLADC (Provisionally Licensed Addictions Counselor) and is working towards becoming an LADC (Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor). Doug says a typical day for him involves a lot of conversations, individual coaching, and just being present in the lives of our guests.
Doug first learned about New Visions through his previous position as Director of the LOVE Jazz and Arts Center in Omaha. One of our residents worked at the Center, and Doug took him under his wing, often giving him rides to and from work. In the process, Doug learned more about the mission of New Visions and was also connected with Willie and Eulish, some of our other staff members. As a member of the Coast Guard, Doug had military experience and his skills were a good fit for our Omaha Veteran’s Campus, so it was a natural transition for him to come on board with our team. Working with our residents on their plan for housing and sobriety, Doug says, “I have a lot of hope for these guys. The thing is to get them to have hope for themselves.”
Doug describes himself as personable, humble, and understanding, and he’s proud of how his own journey with sobriety has changed his life. “It’s a powerful experience to see how your life changes and to know that you could be somewhere very different today,” says Doug. “I’m so glad I stuck with it and I’m seeing the benefits of it today.” Doug loves to travel, specifically to the Dominican Republic, where he hopes to retire someday. Doug also appreciates good seafood, classic rock music, and loves to learn about other cultures. We are so thankful that Doug is using his experience and expertise to impact the lives of our guests, and we’re grateful for Doug’s role on our staff team.
