Meet Desi! This may be a familiar face, as Desi started with us in 2022 as an AmeriCorps member. Since then, Desi has transitioned into a full-time role as our Permanent Supportive Housing (Timothy House) Case Manager. The Timothy House is our 29-unit on-site apartment complex that offers permanent supportive housing (PSH) and resources for individuals who have faced chronic homelessness. We are proud to be a PSH provider as this kind of wrap-around support boasts a high rate of recovery from many of the root issues behind homelessness. Desi’s daily tasks include meeting with PSH residents to help with things like food stamps, social security, and medical appointments.
Desi says that working in homeless services is “in her blood,” as her mom, Stephanie, is also on staff with us as our Council Bluffs Site Director. Patient, joyful, and loyal, Desi brings these and many other attributes to her work at New Visions. Desi has often been complimented on her de-escalation skills, and the joy and positivity that she brings to the office is contagious! “Our clients are someone’s sons and daughters, they are humans” says Desi, “I always try to remember that and it helps me to not judge their situations.”
When it comes to free time, Desi enjoys spending time with her family, shopping, and watching movies. She is currently getting ready to move and enjoying the process of planning out a new living space. Desi is proud of her family and of where she is in life. “Watching my mom and seeing her love for people has really inspired me,” says Desi, “I feel like doing this work is where I’m meant to be.” Desi’s maturity, positivity, and commitment to helping others inspires our clients and staff every day, and we are so grateful to have her on our team at New Visions.
